Ohio Caverns

This weekend we went to Ohio Caverns. We were supposed to go camping down in Kentucky at Mammoth Caves but we've been driving so much this month already that we ended up staying close to home. We still thought it would be fun to see a cave so we drove about 45 min to this cavern.

Spending time in New Mexico and getting to see Carlsbad Caverns really spoiled us. This was nothing like that. It was very small and they only had guided tours - probably because it is so small and they want to make sure that you don't touch anything. You start in a building connected to the gift shop and then when it is your tour time they take you down a set of stairs right into the cavern. The walk way was narrow and we stayed in a single file line the whole time.
They said that in the past they let people touch one of the stalagmites but then it turned all brown from the oils in the hands so they stopped letting people touch anything. This one had broken off so it was the only one that people could touch.
They did turn off the lights at one point and that was pretty neat.
There were parts that Hans and I had to crouch down because the ceiling was lowThe picture below is of the "King Crystal" The tour lasted 45 min and then we had to make a climb back to the surface. I think they said that it was 60 steps up - and they were steep. I know that at a time we were 100 ft below the ground.
Seeing the cavern was really neat and the kids enjoyed it but it made us want to take them back to Carlsbad Caverns even more. If any of you ever get a chance to go there - make sure that you do. It really is amazing!!
